My Favourite Secret Baby Tropes

Secret Baby Trope Recommendations

Today’s post is all about one of those tropes that’s like Marmite (you either love it or you hate it): Secret Babies.

Obviously I love the Secret Baby (SB) trope given that I wrote my own version with Poppy & The Gents (see below).

Let’s start with what defines the SB trope? At its most basic, it’s where the existence of a baby (or child) is hidden from the biological father.

Today’s list includes several different variations on the typical SB trope including (1) the Female Main Character (FMC) isn’t the mother of the SB, (2) the SB is adopted before the Male Main Character (MMC) finds out and (3) it’s the biological father’s family who didn’t know about the SB and only find out after he passes away.

P.S. I’ve tried my best to avoid them but I can’t guarantee that this post will be 100% Spoiler Free.

As always, if you’ve got any recommendations, you can let me know either in the comments or by e-mail at louisehallbooks@gmail.com.

P.S. If you’re looking for more Book Lists, you can find links to them all in the Archives.

(1) Poppy & The Gents by Louise Hall (2021)

Poppy Jones doesn’t date. She’s too busy taking care of her younger sister and managing The Gents, a coffee kiosk at the Arches, a legal graffiti space in South East London.

Street artist, Gabriel Morrone is exactly the type of person Poppy despises. He lives life on his own terms. All he cares about is what he’s going to paint next. That all changes when he comes back from getting coffee one morning to find the three-year-old son he never knew about abandoned on his doorstep.

A rookie parenting mistake immediately puts the reckless artist on a collision course with Perfect Poppy and it is hate at first sight.

When Poppy and Gabriel are forced to spend time together by Poppy’s meddling teenage sister, they realise they’re more similar than they first thought. Living in the moment with Gabriel gives Poppy the chance to reclaim her lost youth while Not-So-Perfect Poppy might be the ideal person to help Gabriel navigate his way through the rocky terrain of fatherhood.

Amidst a backdrop of growing tension between two rival street gangs at the Arches, Poppy and Gabriel’s relationship will face the ultimate test when his son’s biological mother makes a surprise return, setting off a devastating chain of events.

After the paint’s dried, can Gabriel prove to Poppy that he’s no longer the rakish, irresponsible artist she first met at the Arches? Will Poppy be brave enough to give Gabriel another chance even though life with him will never be safe and predictable?

(2) Bountiful (True North #4 & Brooklyn Bruisers #5) by Sarina Bowen (2017)

Once upon a time a cocky, copper-haired tourist sauntered into Zara’s bar. And even though she knew better, Zara indulged in a cure for the small-town blues. It was supposed to be an uncomplicated fling—a few sizzling weeks before he went back to his life, and she moved on.

Until an accidental pregnancy changed her life.

Two years later, she’s made peace with the notion that Dave From Brooklyn will never be found. Until one summer day when he walks into her coffee shop, levelling her with the same hot smile that always renders her defenceless.

Hockey star Dave Beringer has never forgotten the intense month he spent with prickly Zara. Their nights together were the first true intimacy he’d ever experienced. But the discovery of his child is the shock of a lifetime, and his ugly past puts relationships and family out of reach.

Or does it? Vermont’s countryside has a way of nurturing even tortured souls. The fields and the orchards—and hard won love—are Bountiful.

(3) Lies & Lullabies (Hush Note #1) by Sarina Bowen (2020)

Once upon a time, he gave me a summer of friendship, followed by one perfect night. We shared a lot during our short time together. But he skipped a few crucial details.

I didn’t know he was a rock star.

I didn’t know his real name.

Neither of us knew I’d get pregnant.

And I sure never expected to see him again.

Five years later, his tour bus pulls up in Nest Lake, Maine. My little world is about to be shattered by loud music and the pounding of my own foolish heart.

(4) Before We Were Strangers by Renee Carlino (2015)

To the Green-eyed Lovebird:

We met fifteen years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House.

You called us fast friends. I like to think it was more.

We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn’t stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other.

Yet, somehow, it all fell apart. We lost touch the summer after graduation when I went to South America to work for National Geographic. When I came back, you were gone. A part of me still wonders if I pushed you too hard after the wedding…

I didn’t see you again until a month ago. It was a Wednesday. You were rocking back on your heels, balancing on that thick yellow line that runs along the subway platform, waiting for the F train. I didn’t know it was you until it was too late, and then you were gone. Again. You said my name; I saw it on your lips. I tried to will the train to stop, just so I could say hello.

After seeing you, all of the youthful feelings and memories came flooding back to me, and now I’ve spent the better part of a month wondering what your life is like. I might be totally out of my mind, but would you like to get a drink with me and catch up on the last decade and a half?

(5) King of Hearts (Hearts #3) by L.H. Cosway (2015)

I used to rule the world.

There might be wolves on Wall Street, but there were crocodiles in Canary Wharf. Some of us craved money. Some of us craved power.

I liked money, and power had its advantages, but what I really wanted was to excel, to surpass the men who came before me. I never cared much for love and romance until I met Alexis.

I could feel it the very moment she walked into the interview, with her outspoken charm and vivacious personality. She cast all the others in shadow, made me laugh when life held no humour. Our friendship should have remained professional, but it wasn’t long before the lines started to blur.

You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? Well, I never foresaw where my plans would lead, and only in my darkest hour did I finally see the light…

You can have all the money and prestige in the world and still be the poorest man alive. And love, well, I hate to use a tired old cliché, but love can be the thing that truly sets you free.

(6) The Cad and the Co-Ed (Rugby #3) by L.H. Cosway (2017)

Keeping a secret this big is going to take lots of balls. Specifically, rugby balls.

THE CAD: Bryan Leech is a cad. Or, he *was* a cad. No one is quite certain.

Once the quintessential playboy, Bryan claims he’s done with wild parties and weekend benders. No more one night stands leading to mornings he can’t remember; no more binges and blackouts; no more exploits plastered all over the tabloids and rag sheets. According to Bryan, he’s cleaning up his act.

The only problem is, no one believes him.

THE CO-ED: Eilish Cassidy never thought she’d be a mother at nineteen or still in college at twenty-four. Cut off from every member of her family except her favourite cousin, she’s finally managed to put her life back together. Stronger and wiser, Eilish enters her last semester of university determined to stand on her own. Now she just needs to find an internship.

The only problem is, her best option—by far—places her directly in the path of her son’s father, and he doesn’t remember her at all.

THE PLAN: Bryan is determined to prove he’s changed. Eager to settle down with the right woman, he’s got his sights set on the gorgeous redhead who seems terribly familiar.

Eilish is determined to hide her secret. She’ll do anything to keep her child safe, even if that means ignoring her own wishes and desires.

But what happens when Bryan starts to remember? And what will it take for Bryan to convince the girl he forgot that she’s unforgettable?

(7) Only You (One and Only #1) by Melanie Harlow (2018)

Nate Pearson is ridiculously handsome and wears the hell out of a suit and tie, but I’ve seen the parade of beautiful women leaving his apartment across the hall—a different one every time—and I want no part of it. When it comes to romance, I’m looking for something real, something that will last: the happily ever after.

As a divorce attorney, he loves to tell me there’s no such thing.

As a wedding planner, I choose to disagree.

We disagree on almost everything, in fact. Everything except James Bond. The only time we really get along is when we’re watching 007 flicks together, and I’ll admit—he has rescued me from a disaster or five. So when one of the baton twirlers from his parade leaves a baby girl at his door with a note that says “I’ll come back for her” and he begs me for help, I can’t turn him down.

But it’s a mistake.

Because watching him with his daughter, I start to see another side of Nate, a side that has my breath coming faster, my body craving his, my heart longing for him to change his mind about love and tell me there’s a chance for us.

I don’t want to be just another girl leaving his apartment in the morning.

I want to be the one he asks to stay.

(8) Unforgettable (Cloverleigh Farms #5) by Melanie Harlow (2020)

Back then, I had it all. Wicked fastball. Killer instinct. Cocky grin. Full package. (And believe me, I knew how to score.)

My senior year, I was a first round draft pick with a two-million-dollar signing bonus. Before I could even legally buy myself a beer, I made my Major League debut.

Point is, I was invincible. Until one day I wasn’t.

After tanking my career—during the World Series, no less—the last thing I want to do is return to my hometown, where every jerk in a ball cap has an opinion about what went wrong with my arm.

So when my sister drags me back to town for her wedding, I vow to get in and out of there as quickly as possible.

Then I run into April Sawyer.

In high school we were just friends, but I’d always wanted her, and I’d never forgotten her—the red hair, the incredible smile, the crazy, reckless thing we did in the back of my truck the night we said goodbye.

It’s been eighteen years, but one look at her and I feel like my old self again. I can still make her laugh, she can still take me down a notch, and when the chemistry between us explodes, it’s even hotter this time around—and I don’t want it to end.

But just when I think I’m ready to let go of the past and get back in the game, life throws me a curveball I never saw coming.

(9) Friends with Benedicts by Staci Hart (2021)

Timing is everything.

Presley Hale and Sebastian Vargas are no strangers to goodbye. Their high school summers were spent wrapped up in each other until she would inevitably go home to California. One season after college, Sebastian finally escaped the little Texas town to travel the world, and they said goodbye for what they thought might be the last time. Sebastian went one way. Presley went the other.

For the first time in five years, they’re both in town, but the timing is no better than ever. So the only thing to do is what they do best. Keep it casual. Friends with benefits. They’ve done it before—doing it again will be easy. But their hearts don’t get the memo.

When the lines of their arrangement blur, Presley and Sebastian are faced with decisions they’ve avoided for years. And that’s not even their biggest problem. A small town in danger of failing. A secret that could tear them apart. And two hearts that can’t hide anymore.

They’ve shared so many summers, but none compare to what they’ll face.

Timing is everything. And their time is almost up.

(13) Feisty Red (Three Chicks Brewery #2) by Stacey Kennedy (2020)

She’s prepared for anything… except for the second chance with her cowboy ex she never saw coming.

Clara Carter is the brains behind Three Chicks Brewery. The oldest and most responsible of the Carter sisters, she doesn’t have time for anything but taking care of her son and making sure her family’s top beer, Foxy Diva, gets into bars across North America. Which means getting the brew in front of Colorado’s biggest beer distributor. Unfortunately, that becomes tricky when the man in charge of distribution is none other than Sullivan Kenne, the cowboy who ran out on her seven years ago.

Sullivan’s life has been one wrong move after another. First, he tried to prove himself to his bastard father by signing a contract to play professional baseball, a choice Sullivan still regrets. Then he bailed on Clara, the only woman he’s ever loved. Seeing her again makes Sullivan determined to right his wrongs. Unfortunately, he wasn’t counting on one of those wrongs being a six-year-old son he never knew about.

Reuniting with Clara and meeting his son is a shocking–and amazing–experience. But as much as Sullivan tries to return to his roots and be the stand-up cowboy of Clara’s dreams, the reality is, she’s having trouble trusting him. Until one day, years later, Logan Kendrick waltzes into her life once more and turns everything she’s built upside down. This time around, she won’t make the same mistake. She’s going to fight to keep him in her life—not for herself.

Love Under Construction

Love Under Construction (1)

Photo Credit: Ono Kosuki @ Pexels

I’ve been teasing about this particular My Favourites List for the last couple of weeks. My go-to TV channels when I just want to chill out and relax are either the Food Network or HGTV and since I’ve already blogged about My Favourite Fictional Chefs, it’s the turn of My Favourite Fixer Uppers (aka Love Under Construction).

I’ve got even more respect for tradespeople after we redid our 3-for-1 lounge, kitchen & dining room and I realised I’d suddenly developed a fear of heights when I was at the top of the stepladder with a paintbrush in one hand and a paint can in the other. For weeks afterwards I’d wake up in the middle of the night absolutely convinced I was about to fall off that darn ladder.

(3) Man Hands (Man Hands #1) by Sarina Bowen & Tanya Eby (2017)

He puts the “screw” in screwball comedy…

Brynn: At thirty-four, I’m reeling from a divorce. I don’t want to party or try to move on. I just want to stay home and post a new recipe on my blog: Brynn’s Dips and Balls. But my friends aren’t having it. Get out there again, they say. It will be fun, they say. I’m still taking a hard pass. Free designer cocktails, they say. And that’s a game-changer. Too bad my ex shows up with his new arm candy. That’s when I lose my mind. But when my besties dare me to leap on the first single man I see, they don’t expect me to actually go through with it.

Tom: All I need right now is some peace and quiet while my home renovation TV show is on hiatus. But when a curvy woman in a red wrap dress charges me like she’s a gymnast about to mount my high bar, all I can do is brace myself and catch her. What follows is the hottest experience of my adult life. I want a repeat, but my flying Cinderella disappears immediately afterward. She doesn’t leave a glass slipper, either—just a pair of panties with chocolate bunnies printed on them. But I will find her.

(4) The Co-op by Tarah Dewitt (2022)

They say love and construction don’t mix. By that logic, hate and construction may as well be condemned.

LaRynn Lavigne and Deacon Leeds had one short and contentious summer fling when they were teens – certainly nothing to build a foundation on. But a decade later, when their grandmothers have left them with shared ownership of their dilapidated Santa Cruz building, they’re thrust back together and have to figure out how to brace up the pieces.

LaRynn has the money, but in order to access her trust, she has to be married. Deacon has the construction expertise, but lacks the funds. A deal is struck: Marry for however long it takes to fix up the property, collect a profit, and cut ties.

Thrust into a home without walls, LaRynn and Deacon quickly learn that it’s easy to hide behind emotional ones, even in a marriage. But with all the exposure and pitfalls that come with living with the opposite sex (and none of the perks, much to their growing mutual frustration) they’ll also have to learn what it means to truly cooperate as a team.

(5) Built to Last by Erin Hahn (2022)

If you want to read more from Shelby’s friend group, you can check out Lorelei’s story, Friends Don’t Fall in Love and pre-order Maren’s story, Catch and Keep (due out on 15 October 2024).

Shelby Springfield has spent the last ten years trying to overcome her past, sanding it away like she does the rough spots on the vintage furniture finds she makes over. But as a former child star, it’s hard to forget a mediocre pop career, a meltdown widely documented by the paparazzi, and a huge public break with her former co-star Lyle Jessup. It’s also hard to forget her other co-star and childhood sweetheart, Cameron Riggs — the one who got away.

Anytime Shelby has called, Cameron has come running… And then he runs right off again to chase stories around the world by making documentaries, too scared to admit what he really wants. But when Lyle stirs the pot, getting the two back in the spotlight with a home renovation show, Cameron can’t help but come on board.

There’s something in it for everyone — almost. Cameron wants to come home and set down some roots. Shelby wants to prove to the world she’s not the messy party girl anymore. And Lyle wants to twist the screws on his two childhood friends who had more chemistry than he could dream of with anyone. Sparks and sawdust fly as Shelby and Cameron film the pilot for “Homemade” and battle Lyle’s shenanigans at every turn.

(6) Love on Lexington Avenue (Central Park Pact #2) by Lauren Layne (2019)

There are 2 x things you need to know about me as a book blogger: (1) I can and mostly likely will put together a niche book list for any occasion and (2) said book list will probably include at least 1 x book by Lauren Layne #superfan

There’s never a bad time to fall in love in the city, right? Wrong. According to the recently-widowed Claire Hayes, it’s very, very wrong. In fact, after finding out her late husband was a liar and a cheat, Claire’s convinced there’s never a good time for romantic notions. Determined to rid her home of anything that reminds her of her philandering husband, Claire sets out to redesign her entire Upper East Side brownstone and make it her own. But when she meets gruff and often-cantankerous contractor Scott Turner and realizes not all men are scumbags, Claire must decide if she’s ready to risk her heart again.

Scott needs a change of pace from the corporate offices and swanky hotels he’s been building lately, and bluntly makes it clear to Claire that he only took on her house for that reason, adding that he has no patience for a pampered, damaged princess on his job site. But when long work days soon turn into even longer nights, their mutual wariness morphs into something more complicated—a grudging respect, and maybe even attraction…? Scott knows he’s not one to settle down, but then why can’t he bring himself to put the finishing touches on Claire’s house and move on to the next job?

(7) Mr Fixer Upper (Fixer #1) by Lucy Score (2017)

Mr Fixer Upper is the 1st of 3 x Lucy Score books on this list, was my 1st Five Star Read of 2024 and one of the main inspirations for this blog post.

Gannon King is great with his hands and—if you believe what you read on Twitter—he’s “sex in a toolbelt.” The reality TV star learned his lesson about falling for pretty packages the hard, painful, humiliating way and he’s not making that mistake again.

Sure, “Legs” is gorgeous as hell and smart-mouthed—two of his favourite qualities in a woman. But she’s an icy network kiss-ass. At least, that’s what he thinks until he catches her being human.

Field producer Paige St. James has zero time for temperamental stars, especially Gannon who does his best to get under her skin. She’s got plans to get out of reality TV and do something that matters.

But ratings are king and, when Paige and Gannon’s sparks are captured by cameras, the network smells a time slot victory. After an on-set accident and a vindictive celebrity “girlfriend,” Paige finds her reputation in tatters and her job hanging by a thread.

She never should have trusted him…

But now that he’s gotten those talented hands on her, Gannon’s never letting go.

(8) The Christmas Fix (Fixer #2) by Lucy Score (2017)

She’ll save Christmas just to spite him…

When a late season hurricane hits Merry, Connecticut, city manager and single dad Noah Yates has to inform the already devastated residents that there won’t be a Christmas Festival this year. No festival means no tourism dollars. A disaster of epic proportions for his hometown.

But when home renovation expert slash smoking hot reality TV star Catalina King shows up with a camera crew and a budget big enough to put the town back together again, Noah balks. Hard. The last time Cat was in town she stirred up trouble everywhere she went. (Residents are still talking about the town’s first and only bar fight.) Noah doesn’t need a TV diva capitalizing on his town’s tragedy or filling his daughter’s head with glitz and glam.

Cat is ready and willing to put Merry back in Christmas mode with a holiday special that will leave everyone believing in miracles and get her friends back in the home they love. But there’s one big problem standing in her way. And his name is Noah Yates. He’s wrong about her and she can’t wait to prove it. Ring those jingle bells because it’s on.

(9) Maggie Moves On by Lucy Score (2022)

House-flipping sensation and YouTube star Maggie Nichols can’t wait to dig into her next challenge. Arriving in tiny Kinship, Idaho, with only a cot and a coffeemaker, Maggie is prepared to restore a crumbling Victorian mansion in four months or less. She has her to-do lists, her blueprints, and her team. What she doesn’t have is time for sexy, laid-back landscaper Silas Wright.

The man takes flirtation to a whole new level. And he does it shirtless…sometimes pants-less. He and his service school-dropout dog are impressively persistent. But she’s not interested in putting down roots. Not when fans tune in to watch her travel the country turning dilapidated houses into dream homes. A short-term fling on the other hand could fit nicely into her calendar. After all, Maggie remembers what fun is like. Vaguely.

As their summer gets downright steamy, Silas manages to demolish the emotional walls she’s spent years building, sending Maggie into a panic. He’s the wrench in her carefully constructed plans. With the end of the project looming, she has a decision to make. But how can she stay when her entire career is built on moving on?

I love baked goods & book lists so what better way to celebrate the return of GBBO than with the Great Fictional Bake-Off (GFBO) 2023.

In this GFBO, it’s up to you to decide who gets Star Baker and who gets sent home.

It’s time to meet your 10 x fictional bakers…

Contestant #1 is Noah Walker from The Pie Shop in Rome, Kentucky, USA. If the name Noah Walker sounds familiar to you, it’s because in addition to following in his family’s decades-long tradition of making delicious pies, he’s also the love interest of pop princess, Rae Rose. Although if he’s going to succeed in this year’s GFBO 2023, he’s going to have to get over his dislike of pies (yep, you read that right, even though the pies he makes are a big hit in Rome, Kentucky, Noah doesn’t actually eat them himself).

When in Rome (Rome, Kentucky #1) by Sarah Adams (2022)

Amelia Rose, known as Rae Rose to her adoring fans, is burned-out from years of maintaining her “princess of pop” image. Inspired by her favourite Audrey Hepburn film, Roman Holiday, she drives off in the middle of the night for a break in Rome . . . Rome, Kentucky, that is.

When Noah Walker finds Amelia on his front lawn in her broken-down car, he makes it clear he doesn’t have the time or patience for celebrity problems. He’s too busy running the pie shop his grandmother left him and reminding his nosy but lovable neighbours to mind their own damn business. Despite his better judgment, he lets her stay in his guest room—but only until her car is fixed—then she’s on her own.

Then Noah starts to see a different side of Rae Rose—she’s Amelia: kind-hearted and goofy, yet lonely from years in the public eye. He can’t help but get close to her. Soon she’ll have to return to her glamorous life on tour, but until then, Noah will show Amelia all the charming small-town experiences she’s been missing, and she’ll help him open his heart to more.

Amelia can’t resist falling for the cosy town and her grumpy tour guide, but even Audrey had to leave Rome eventually.

Contestant #2 is Alana (Lana) Castillo from Lake Wisteria, Michigan, USA. Lana, who often draws on her Colombian heritage with her bakes, is famous in Lake Wisteria for her blueberry crumb cake, which almost incited a riot at the small town’s 4th of July barbecue. Even if you haven’t been lucky enough to visit Lake Wisteria yet, if you’ve been to Dreamland and salivated over the yummy tres leches cakes in the land of Princess Marianna, you’ve got Lana to thank for that because she’s a baking consultant for the theme park and rumour has it the Kane Company were so impressed with her tres leches cake that they paid her $5m for the recipe. She’s definitely one to watch in this year’s GFBO.

Final Offer (Dreamland Billionaires #3) by Lauren Asher (2023)

Callahan: I’m the Kane brother everyone gossips about behind closed doors. Trust fund brat. Washed-up athlete. High-functioning alcoholic. No one knows the real me but her. Lana Castillo—my childhood best friend and the only woman I ever loved. When I broke her heart six years ago, I promised to never return to Lake Wisteria. I kept my word until my grandfather’s will changed everything. To receive my inheritance, I was tasked with spending a summer at the family lake house before selling it. The request was simple in theory until my entire plan blew up on the very first day. Turns out Lana doesn’t just live at the house, but she claims to own it, too.

Alana: Falling in love with Callahan Kane was a mistake. He told me so before destroying my heart and our friendship six summers ago. When he promised never to come back, I foolishly believed him. But then Cal showed up again, intending to sell his grandfather’s lake house. The biggest flaw in his plan? My name is on the deed.

Contestant #3 is Ginger Winter from Ginger’s Bake Shop in Reindeer Falls. Ginger is already a veteran of bake-offs having reached the final in Season 1 of the Food Network’s Great Gingerbread Bake-Off and co-hosted Season 2 with British celebrity chef, Keller James (Brunch, Biscuits & Tea). Ginger and Keller falling in love during Season 1 was captured by the GGBO cameras and in addition to co-hosting duties, the couple also have companion restaurants with Keller opening Gingersnap’s breakfast restaurant right next door to Ginger’s Bake Shop in Reindeer Falls.

If You Give A Jerk A Gingerbread (Reindeer Falls #2) by Jana Aston (2019)

Dear Santa,

I do not want Keller James for Christmas.

I will not fall for him, no matter how charming or irresistible or famous he is. I will not be swayed by his skills in the kitchen or by his British accent. I’m going to win the Great Gingerbread Bake Off and no one is going to stand in my way. Not even Keller.

All kisses are off. I mean all bets. All bets are off. And his clothes, those are off too.

Grr, never mind. I’ll figure this out myself.

XOXO,

Ginger Winter

Contestant #4 is Leo Bexley (son of Broadway legend, Bernard Bexley) from The Cookie Jar in New York City, New York, USA. The Cookie Jar went viral on TikTok when Leo & love interest, Reese came up with the idea for the Sweetest Fix. Leo’s personalised cake pops proved to be such a must-have for cynical New Yorkers that they almost broke the internet. Time will tell if the judges of this year’s GFBO will also fall under the spell of Leo and his magical creations.

The Sweetest Fix by Tessa Bailey (2021)

Reese dreams of seeing her name in lights on Broadway, but so far she has only graced the used car parking lots of rural Wisconsin. With her window of opportunity shrinking fast, a miracle happens. She wins an audition with Bernard Bexley, Broadway’s most respected dance choreographer. When disaster strikes and Reese misses the audition, she has to find another way in front of Bernard, otherwise face the disappointment back home.

Following the sage advice of a Times Square Pikachu—Reese seeks out Bernard’s son, prepared to beg for his aid, never expecting mega sparks to fly between her and the gentle giant baker. With Reese’s heart now involved, she refuses to use Leo to her advantage and tries to walk away before her ulterior motives are exposed, but gravity continues to draw them back together…until it’s impossible to stay apart.

But Reese’s lie of omission can only stay buried for so long. When Leo finds out how their relationship started, will Reese keep her ultimate role as Leo’s leading lady? Or will the curtain fall on their real-life fairytale?

Contestant #5 is Posy Paxton from Posy’s Pie Shop in New York City, New York, USA and rule Posy out of the GFBO at your peril. A little competition isn’t going to faze her after PPS was almost put out of business by her ex-husband’s psychotic new girlfriend, Posy and her young nephew were kidnapped and held at gunpoint and as if that wasn’t enough, PPS was also at the centre of a cat and mouse game between The Company, a high-tech security company and The Plumber, who used the shop’s Wi-Fi to post about his murderous crimes.

Loverboy (The Company #2) by Sarina Bowen (2020)

Secrets, desires, and exquisite pie. It’s all in a day’s work at The Company.

Growing up, I was the rough guy from the wrong neighbourhood who couldn’t catch a break. Posy was the pampered girl I tried to impress. But I managed to steal only a single kiss before I had to skip town. Now I’m back, and the tables are turned. Posy runs a struggling pie shop. I’m the VP of a secretive billion dollar security company.

Not that I can tell her.

There’s a murderer on the loose in New York, and he seems to spend a lot of time at Posy’s shop. I can’t let on that I’m here to bring him down before he can harm a hair on her pretty head.

Going undercover as Posy’s new barista wasn’t my idea. I don’t even drink coffee. But now I have to call her “boss,” and do everything the curvy perfectionist asks of me. I’d forgotten how much we infuriate each other, and that she somehow fills me with both irritation and desire in the same breath.

There’s nobody more skilled at stealth ops than me. I can bring this killer down. Right after I take a cold shower. And just as soon I figure out how to make a skinny peppermint latte with milk poured in the shape of a kitten…

Contestant #6 is 2 x Stanley Cup winner & Chef de Pâtissier at Black Delilah, Lucian (Oz) Osmond. Like Noah (#1), Oz also has a famous love interest in Emma Maron aka Princess Anya on Dark Castle. After being forced out of professional hockey by concussion syndrome, Oz retreated to his grandmother’s Rosemont estate near the base of the Santa Ynez Mountains in Montecito, California, USA and found refuge in the pâtisserie recipes his great-grandfather (Jean Philipe aka one of the greatest pastry chefs in the world) taught him during childhood summers in France.

Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan (2021)

Life for Emma isn’t good. The world knows her as Princess Anya on Dark Castle, but then her character gets the axe—literally. The cherry on top is finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. She needs a break, and sanctuary comes in the form of Rosemont, a gorgeous estate in California promising rest and relaxation.

Then she meets the owner’s equally gorgeous grandson, ex–hockey player and current recluse Lucian Osmond, and she sees her own pain and yearning reflected in his eyes. He’s charming when he wants to be but also secretive and gruff, with protective walls as thick as Emma’s own.

Despite a growing attraction, they avoid each other. But then there’s an impromptu nighttime skinny-dip, and Lucian’s luscious homemade tarts and cream cakes start arriving at Emma’s door, tempting her to taste life again… In trying to stay apart, they only grow closer—and their broken pieces just might fit together and make them whole.

In keeping with the French theme, Contestant #7 is Nina Hadley from Nina’s in Paris, France. Originally from the UK, even hard-to-please Parisians adore Nina’s Anglo-French fusion pastries including the social media sensation, chocolat caramel suprême (a twist on the classic millionaire’s shortbread). Nina got her big break helping her brother’s friend, Sebastian Finley with teaching at a patisserie. Mostly self-taught, with her innate gift for flavours and enthusiasm for all things pastry, Nina will be one to watch in this year’s GFBO (as long as she doesn’t have to go anywhere near raw meat otherwise producers might need to have an ambulance on stand by).

The Little Paris Patisserie (Romantic Escapes #3) by Julie Caplin (2018)

In a cosy corner of Paris, a delicious little patisserie is just waiting to be discovered. And romance might just be on the menu…

As the youngest of four, Nina Hadley has always had her big brothers telling her what to do. So, when she’s given the chance to move to Paris and help run a patisserie course, she can’t say au revoir quick enough!

There’s just one problem: high-flying chef Sebastian Finlay is the owner of the patisserie. He’s also her brother Nick’s best friend – and the man she has secretly been in love with since forever.

Amongst the mouth-wateringly delicious eclairs and delicate macaroons, Nina’s culinary creations aren’t the only tempting thing she’s working with…

After a disappointing stint at culinary school, Contestant #8, Blaire Calloway spent a year in Paris, France and fell in love with all things patisserie. When she returned to the U.S. she was co-owner of a food truck, Cakes to Go! before opening cupcake and cocktail cafe, Buttercream and Booze. After fiercely competing for potential customers with her next-door neighbour, Ronan Knight, Blaire and Ronan didn’t just get engaged (their proposal went viral), they also combined their business interests by opening The Knight Cap and Cupcakery. We all know how much of a fan our judges are of alcohol with baked goods so if Blaire can get the balance right, she could be on to a winner with this combo.

Kiss My Cupcake by Helena Hunting (2020)

Blaire Calloway has planned every Instagram-worthy moment of her cupcake and cocktails shop launch down to the tiniest detail. What she didn’t plan on? Ronan Knight and his old-school sports bar next door opening on the very same day. He may be super swoony, but Blaire hasn’t spent years obsessing over buttercream and bourbon to have him ruin her chance at success.

From axe throwing (his place) to frosting contests (hers), Blaire and Ronan are constantly trying to one-up each other in a battle to win new customers. But with every clash, there’s also an undeniable chemistry. When an even bigger threat to their business comes to town, they’re forced to call a temporary time-out on their own war and work together. And the more time Blaire spends getting to know the real Ronan, the more she wonders if it’s possible to have her cupcake and eat it too.

Chances are that you might not have heard of Contestant #9 Polly Lockhart, owner of Wild Child Bakery in Rainsville, California, USA but if you’re a lover of candy, you’ll most likely have tasted the heart-shaped rock candies, which were named after her aka Polly Promises by the Sugar Rush Candy Company. Polly and Wild Child also started the nationwide craze for Declairs (hybrid éclair and doughnuts). Like Lucian (#6), Nina (#7) & Blaire (#8), Polly has also tested her pastry mettle in France after completing Art of French Pastry in Paris mentored by amongst others, Pierre Lacroix.

Sweet Dreams (Sugar Rush #1) by Nina Lane (2016)

He makes sweet the new sexy.

Sugar Rush Candy Company CEO Luke Stone is a devoted businessman who doesn’t do relationships. He does short-term affairs with clearly defined rules. But when a sexy bohemian angel propositions him in a bar, Luke is tempted to want more.

Polly Lockhart is horrified when she wakes the morning after her twenty-third birthday to realize she made a fool of herself with a sinfully delicious man. She tells herself she doesn’t have time for romance anyway, as she’s fighting to keep her mother’s beloved bakery afloat and finish her culinary studies. That all changes when her class tours the famed Sugar Rush headquarters, and Polly collides with her dream man again.

As she succumbs to their hot attraction, Polly soon realizes her bakery isn’t the only thing that needs saving. Luke, driven and unyielding, will burn out unless someone convinces him to taste the sweetness of life. But can Polly remember this sugar rush is only temporary?

Rock star, Leo Nash and his fellow Seattle-ites know what they’re talking about when they wax lyrical about the baking skills of Contestant #10, Nic Dalton from Succulent Sweets in Seattle, Washington, USA. After growing up in a small town in Wyoming, Nic worked various jobs after leaving high school until at 23 she’d saved up enough to be able to attend culinary school at the Art Institute in Seattle. Like Noah (#1), Nic doesn’t indulge in her own creations but unlike Noah, who doesn’t like pie, Nic has to be careful with her sugars because she’s diabetic. A self-confessed control freak, it’ll be interesting to see how Nic copes with the twists and turns of the GFBO.

Tied With Me (With Me in Seattle #6) by Kristen Proby (2014)

A man whose lifestyle is so different from her own…

Nic Dalton’s cupcake bakery is thriving. She serves both rock stars and locals alike, content with her growing business. But one adventurous night out with her best friend, Bailey, turns her life upside down. She meets a handsome stranger who makes her skin sizzle and her heart race. Their one night together is explosive and unexpected, but when he has to suddenly leave without taking her phone number, Nic resigns herself to never seeing him again.

…What will it take to trust and submit to his every desire?

Matt Montgomery is one of Seattle’s finest. He works hard, loves and protects his family fiercely, and is loyal almost to a fault.

And he has a penchant for bondage.

Matt enjoys the way a woman looks wrapped up in his ropes, and makes no apologies for his preferences. When he meets Nic at a fetish festival, the small, beautiful woman catches his eye, drawing him to her. His one night with her was everything he’s ever looked for in a partner, but is cut short because of a family emergency. Even before he sees her again weeks later, he knows he’ll never get her out of his system.

And he’ll do whatever it takes to make her his.

“Give in to this, Nic. Let me prove to you that I will be one of the best decisions you ever make.” –Matt Montgomery

What Happens in Vegas…

What Happens in Vegas...

Photo Credit: Mirac Sendil @ Pexels.

Continuing on with the marital theme from my recent Book Lists: After I Do: Fictional Marriages on the Rocks and My Favourite Marriages of Convenience, today’s post, What Happens in Vegas… is all about the fictional couples who’ve tied the knot in the Marriage Capital of the World.

Did You Know? Over 70k people get hitched in Las Vegas every year. Wedding-related tourism accounts for nearly $2 billion of the city’s $58 billion tourism industry and has generated 18k jobs (Hustle).

It’s not a new phenomenon either; in fact, the state of Nevada has been a popular destination for shotgun weddings since the early 1900s because unlike other states, Nevada nixed the requirements for blood tests and waiting periods.

If you woke up the morning after and realised you’d made a humungous (most probably, drunken) mistake, you didn’t have to worry because in 1931, Governor Fred B. Balzar signed the Six-Week Divorce Act so as long as you were OK with staying in Nevada for 6 weeks, you could get a quickie divorce. The Divorce Act was “designed to keep Nevada and Reno foremost in the business of serving unsuccessful marriages” (Reno Gazzette Journal).

Given its close proximity to Hollywood, there have been plenty of celebrity weddings in Las Vegas although some of them lasted longer than others…

Probably the most infamous short-lived marriage was between Britney Spears and her childhood friend, Jason Alexander, who got married at the Little White Wedding Chapel in the early hours of 3 January 2004 before getting it annulled after just 55 hours. They aren’t the only ones who quickly had regrets after getting married in Vegas. Nicolas Cage married Erika Koike in Vegas on 23 March 2019 but sought an annulment just 4 days later (27 March) claiming both he and Erika had been drinking “to the point of intoxication” before they wed (USA Today). Another couple who perhaps would have benefitted from a waiting period before tying the knot are Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman, who got married on 14 November 1998 at Chapel of the Flowers only to file for divorce 6 months later with Dennis claiming he was “of unsound mind when he recited his vows” (People).

Of course, not every celebrity marriage which begins in Las Vegas ends in annulment or divorce. Couples who are still together include: Bette Midler & Martin von Haselberg, who married at the Starlight Chapel (Closed) on 16 December 1984 (ET Online); Jon Bon Jovi & Dorothea Hurley, who married at the Graceland Wedding Chapel on 29 April 1989 and; Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos, who married at the Chapel of the Bells on 1 May 1996 (People).

When I wrote ‘My First Half,’ I knew there was only one place for Cate and Kian to have their shotgun wedding and that was Las Vegas.

So without further ado, I now pronounce the following My Favourite (Fictional) Vegas Weddings.

If you’ve got any recommendations, let me know in the comments or by e-mail at louisehallbooks@gmail.com.

P.S. If you’re looking for more Book Lists, you can find links to them all in the Archives.

Happy reading x

*UPDATED 30 NOVEMBER 2023*

(1) My First Half (Cate & Kian #1) (2017)

“I’ve kissed a lot of girls,” Kian said huskily, “but I’ve never felt like that before. There’s something between us, Cate and I can’t explain why or what it is, I just know that ever since we kissed last night, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.” “Tell me you’re joking,” Cate said softly, “tell me this is all a wind-up.”

Cate Klein and Kian Warner absolutely shouldn’t be together. He’s a gorgeous Premier League footballer who’s famous in the tabloids for his one-night stands with models and pop princesses. Cate is 18 years old and has never even been kissed. She’s focused on studying for her A Levels and going to university. Boys don’t really notice her; she’s always been overshadowed by her vivacious best friend, Sinead. She doesn’t mind though because none of the boys she goes to college with could live up to her two crushes; Edward Rochester from Jane Eyre and Kian. There’s also the small fact that Kian is best friends with Cate’s older brother, Ben and Sinead, well she’s Kian’s younger sister.

But then on Christmas Eve, a lacy, black dress and a dare from Sinead catapults Cate straight into Kian’s waiting arms and before she can even say “mistletoe,” she’s not the quiet girl who’s never been kissed anymore. In fact the kiss they shared was so blazing hot; it must have burned up all the rule books because suddenly Kian freaking Warner actually seems to fancy quiet Cate Klein.

If their families ever found out, it would start World War 3 so they have to meet up in secret. But when tragedy strikes, Kian turns to Cate for comfort. The consequences of that night mean that they can no longer keep their relationship a secret from their families.

Cate has spent 18 years hiding in the shadows, how will she cope when she’s suddenly thrust into the harsh spotlight? He might be a Premier League footballer but being with Kian Warner definitely isn’t a fairy-tale of spa days and designer shopping trips.

(3) Good Time (Vegas Billionaires #2) by Jana Aston (2018)

Marrying a stranger tops the list of things you should never do in Las Vegas, but I did it anyway.

The entire night was my idea. I was the one who suggested a wake-up-with-a-tiger kind of night. Instead, I woke up with a ring on my finger and Vince Rossi in my bed.

Vince, who was nothing like I thought he was and everything I never knew I needed.

Suddenly I was falling head-over-heels in love with my accidental husband and the idea of ending this union was the last thing I wanted.

I wanted forever.

So what if we barely knew each other? Statistically speaking, our odds were as good as anyone’s.

Until the annulment papers landed on my doorstep…

(4) Shenanigans (Brooklyn Bruisers #11) by Sarina Bowen (2022)

What I meant to do in Vegas: Let my hair down for once and celebrate winning a medal at my first women’s hockey all-stars competition.

What I actually did: Got senior prom drunk and woke up married to Brooklyn’s star winger, the great Neil Drake.

He’s the heir to a billion dollars, and I barely survived my childhood. Our friendship is based strictly only on hockey, takeout food and smack talk.

And now holy matrimony. Although we both know it can’t last, especially once his evil family gets wind of our Vegas shenanigans…

Contains: Meddling teammates, meddling parents, ugly jewelry and a pretend-kiss that nearly sets the world on fire.

(5) Make-Believe Match (Cherry Tree Harbor #3) by Melanie Harlow (2023)

Fall in love with my enemy? No way.

Marry him to save my family’s struggling ski resort? That’s a different story…

Getting hitched is the only way I can inherit Snowberry Lodge, and I’ll do anything to spare my childhood home from the wrecking ball–even wear Devlin Buckley’s ring on my finger.

Not that I’ll enjoy it.

Sure, he’s charming and handsome, and that no-last-names one night stand we shared ended with a fantastically big bang (I saw stars I hadn’t seen in six months, if you catch my drift).

But I’ll never trust him–he was working for the company trying to bulldoze my life.

Right up until the day he knocked on my door with an offer I couldn’t refuse.

Marry him, and he’ll help me restore my family’s crumbling resort to its former glory–and get revenge on his ex-boss in the process. Once our goals are achieved, we’ll go our separate ways.

It’s temporary. Strictly business. Purely for show.

Until I realize how much I like it when he says “my wife.”

Once we’re sharing a last name–and a bed–our make-believe match starts to feel a little too real.

And if I’m not careful, I could lose everything… my home, my dreams, and my heart.

(6) Sweet Filthy Boy (Wild Seasons #1) by Christina Lauren (2014)

One-night stands are supposed to be with someone convenient, or wickedly persuasive, or regrettable. They aren’t supposed to be with someone like him.

But after a crazy Vegas weekend celebrating her college graduation—and terrified of the future path she knows is a cop-out—Mia Holland makes the wildest decision of her life: follow Ansel Guillaume—her sweet, filthy fling—to France for the summer and just…play.

(7) Dirty Rowdy Thing (Wild Seasons #2) by Christina Lauren (2014)

(8) Dark Wild Night (Wild Seasons #3) by Christina Lauren (2015)

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. But what didn’t happen in Vegas seems to follow them everywhere.

Lola and Oliver like to congratulate themselves on having the good sense to not consummate their drunken Las Vegas wedding. If they’d doubled-down on that mistake, their Just Friends situation might not be half as great as it is now.

… Or so goes the official line.

In reality, Lola’s wanted Oliver since day one—and over time has only fallen harder for his sexy Aussie accent and easygoing ability to take her as she comes. More at home in her studio than in baring herself to people, Lola’s instinctive comfort around Oliver nearly seems too good to be true. So why ruin a good thing?

Even as geek girls fawn over him, Oliver can’t get his mind off what he didn’t do with Lola when he had the chance. He knows what he wants with her now… and it’s far outside the friend zone. When Lola’s graphic novel starts getting national acclaim—and is then fast-tracked for a major motion picture—Oliver steps up to be there for her whenever she needs him. After all, she’s not the kind of girl who likes all that attention, but maybe she’s the kind who’ll eventually like him.

Sometimes seeing what’s right in front of us takes a great leap of faith. And sometimes a dark wild night in Vegas isn’t just the end of a day, but the beginning of a bright new life…

(13) The Scandal (Single in Seattle #2) by Kristen Proby (2022)

Who knew that weddings in Vegas were the real deal? I certainly didn’t when I agreed to marry my co-worker while on a bender in Sin City. Now, I need a quick annulment, which means I need an attorney, STAT.

Honestly, with a name like Grayson Sterling, Esquire, I expected an old man in a three-piece suit. But the guy behind the desk is anything but stuffy and old. Tall and sexy with tattoos and striking blue eyes, I simply can’t take my eyes off him, and I have no intention of declining his offer of a date…and more. So much more!

The conversation between us is good, and the man should win awards for his bedroom escapades. I find myself trusting him in ways I never thought I would—until he breaks that trust.

Gray insists he can fix it.

He claims he loves me.

But I don’t know if we can survive this.

(15) When I Was Yours by Samantha Towle (2015)

“Marry me.”

“What?” I stared back at him, unblinking.

He moved closer, taking my face in his hands. “I love you, Evie. I look into the future, and the only thing I see clearly is you. Marry me.”

What’s an eighteen-year-old girl who was madly in love with her nineteen-year-old boyfriend say?

Of course, I said yes.

Twenty-four hours later, I married Adam Gunner at a Vegas chapel to the sounds of “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. Not the best omen. I get that now.

Then, exactly one week later, I left him. I walked out, leaving behind my wedding ring, annulment papers, and my heart, and he never knew why.

I haven’t seen him since. Not in ten long years.

Now, he’s here, standing before me. Looking at me with nothing but hurt and hatred in his eyes, he wants answers.

Answers I can’t give.

(16) The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata (2016)

Vanessa Mazur knows she’s doing the right thing. She shouldn’t feel bad for quitting. Being an assistant/housekeeper/fairy godmother to the top defensive end in the National Football Organization was always supposed to be temporary. She has plans and none of them include washing extra-large underwear longer than necessary.

But when Aiden Graves shows up at her door wanting her to come back, she’s beyond shocked.

For two years, the man known as The Wall of Winnipeg couldn’t find it in him to tell her good morning or congratulate her on her birthday. Now? He’s asking for the unthinkable.

What do you say to the man who is used to getting everything he wants?

A-Z: My Favourite Authors & Books – B

F

Today’s blog post is the 2nd in a new series featuring an A-Z of My Favourite Authors & Books. Every Monday I’ll be blogging about my all-time favourite books from authors with surnames beginning with that week’s letter.

P.S. If you’ve missed any of my previous posts, you’ll find links to them all in the Archives.

Today’s letter is B and my 4 x Favourite Authors & Books are as follows:

AUTHOR: Tessa Bailey (Website / Instagram / Twitter)

New York Times Bestselling author Tessa Bailey can solve all problems except for her own, so she focuses those efforts on stubborn, fictional blue collar men and loyal, lovable heroines. She lives on Long Island avoiding the sun and social interactions, then wonders why no one has called. Dubbed the “Michelangelo of dirty talk,” by Entertainment Weekly, Tessa writes with spice, spirit, swoon and a guaranteed happily ever after (Author Website).

Books I’ve Read by This Author: 21 including Need Me (Need Me) (My Favourite Professor & Student Romances), Window Shopping (12 Bookish Dates of Christmas) & It Happened One Summer (Five Star Reads – July 2022).

BOOK: Unfixable (2014)

Side Note: I’m as guilty as anybody of being influenced by the latest BookTok trends but even though ‘It Happened One Summer’ was a Five Star Read, I’ve gone all the way back to 2014 (before TikTok) for my favourite TB novel.

He’s the last thing she wants…but the only thing she needs.

Willa Peet isn’t interested in love. She’s been there, done that, and has the shattered heart to prove it. Ready to shake the breakup, she heads to Dublin, Ireland. But there’s a problem. A dark-haired, blue-eyed problem with a bad attitude that rivals her own. And he’s not doling out friendly Irish welcomes.

Shane Claymore just wants to race. The death of his father forced him off the Formula One circuit, but he’s only staying in Dublin long enough to sell the Claymore Inn and get things in order for his mother and younger sister. He never expected the sarcastic American girl staying at the inn to make him question everything.

But even as Willa and Shane’s fiery natures draw them together, their pasts threaten to rip them apart. Can Shane give up racing to be with the woman he loves, or will Willa’s quest to resurrect the tough-talking, no-shit-taking girl she used to be destroy any hope of a future together?

WHAT’S NEXT? Wreck The Halls (3 October 2023) & Fangirl Down (6 February 2024).

AUTHOR: Louise Bay (Website / Instagram / Twitter)

International, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author, Louise Bay writes sexy, contemporary romance novels – the kind she likes to read.

Ruined by bonk-busters and sexy mini-series of the eighties Louise loves all things sexy and romantic. There’s not enough of it in real life so she disappears into the fictional worlds in books and films.

Louise loves the rain, the West Wing, London, days when she doesn’t have to wear make-up, being on her own, being with friends, elephants and champagne (Author Website).

Books I’ve Read by This Author: 29 including The 14 Days of Christmas (12 Bookish Dates of Christmas), A Week in New York (A New York State of Mind) & Dr Off-Limits (Five Star Reads – October 2022)

BOOK: Hopeful (2014)

I’ve spent the last eight years working hard to put my career front and centre in my life, dodging any personal complications. I have a strict no-dating policy. I’ve managed to piece together a reality that works for me.

Eight years ago, Joel Wentworth, the love of my life, left for New York. I’d refused to go with him and I haven’t seen him again. Never even spoken to him.

Until now.

Now, Joel’s coming back to London.

And I need to get over him before he gets over here.

WHAT’S NEXT? Dr CEO (3 August 2023).

AUTHOR: Sarina Bowen (Website / Instagram / Twitter)

Sarina Bowen is a 24-time USA Today bestselling author, and a Wall Street Journal bestselling author of contemporary romance novels. Formerly a derivatives trader on Wall Street, Sarina holds a BA in economics from Yale University.

A New Englander whose Vermont ancestors cut timber and farmed the north country in the 1760s, Sarina is grateful for the invention of indoor plumbing and wi-fi during the intervening 250 years. She lives with her family on a few wooded acres in New Hampshire (Author Website).

Books I’ve Read by This Author: 39 including The Shameless Hour (#4) (My Favourite Books of 2021) & The Fifteenth Minute (#5) (Five Star Reads – August & September 2021) from The Ivy Years. Waylaid (#8) (Five Star Reads – August & September 2021) from True North. Sure Shot (#4) (Five Star Reads – May – 2020) & Bombshells (#5) (Five Star Reads – April 2021) from Brooklyn. Moonlighter (#1) (Five Star Reads April 2020) from The Company. Boy Toy (#3) (Five Star Reads -May 2020) from Man Hands with Tanya Eby.

BOOK: Brooklynaire (Brooklyn Bruisers #4) (2018)

Side Note: One of my all-time favourite reads. I could legit write an essay on how much I heart Nate and Becca.

You’d think a billion dollars, a professional hockey team and a six-bedroom mansion on the Promenade would satisfy a guy. You’d be wrong.

For seven years Rebecca has brightened my office with her wit and her smile. She manages both my hockey team and my sanity. I don’t know when I started waking in the night, craving her. All I know is that one whiff of her perfume ruins my concentration. And her laugh makes me hard.

When Rebecca gets hurt, I step in to help. It’s what friends do. But what friends don’t do is rip off each other’s’ clothes for a single, wild night together.

Now she’s avoiding me. She says we’re too different, and it can never happen again. So why can’t we keep our hands off each other?

WHAT’S NEXT? I’m Your Guy (2 November 2023)

AUTHOR: Gemma Burgess (Website / Instagram)

Gemma started writing anti-romantic comedies for girls who like chicklit that comforts and charms without the silly fluffy bits. She lives in Notting Hill in London, but grew up all over the place – mostly Hong Kong. She loves talking and writing, not necessarily in that order.

She also loves burgers, vodka, white-tipped Marlboro Lights, OK GO, Sixteen Candles, Lucky Jim, anything from Nora Ephron and Jilly Cooper, new wave music and clothes (Goodreads).

Books I’ve Read by This Author: 3
