Falling for My Best Friend’s Brother

Falling for My Best Friend’s Brother

Original Photo Credit: Andrea Piacquadio @ Pexels.

Today’s Book List is inspired by my current read – ‘Take Two, Birdie Maxwell’ by Allison Winn Scotch (10) which features Hollywood A-Lister, Birdie going on an RV road trip with her best friend’s twin brother (and secret crush), Elliot to discover which of her exes left her an unsigned letter asking for a second chance.

I’m such a fan of both the Falling for My Best Friend’s Brother and Falling for My Brother’s Best Friend tropes that I included them in ‘My First Half’ (1). Kian isn’t just Cate’s best friend, Sinead’s older brother, he’s also Cate’s brother, Ben’s best friend.

Take Two, Birdie Maxwell’ is the second Falling for My Best Friend’s Brother trope I’ve read recently after ‘Ready or Not’ by Cara Bastone (5), which was a Five Star Read from March 2024 so I decided to go back through my Goodreads and put together a Book List.

As always, if you’ve got any recommendations, you can let me know either in the comments or by e-mail at louisehallbooks@gmail.com.

P.S. If you’re looking for more Book Lists, you can find links to them all in the Archives.

Happy reading x

(1) My First Half (Cate & Kian #1) by Louise Hall (2017)

“I’ve kissed a lot of girls,” Kian said huskily, “but I’ve never felt like that before. There’s something between us, Cate and I can’t explain why or what it is, I just know that ever since we kissed last night, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.” “Tell me you’re joking,” Cate said softly, “tell me this is all a wind-up.”

Cate Klein and Kian Warner absolutely shouldn’t be together. He’s a gorgeous Premier League footballer who’s famous in the tabloids for his one-night stands with models and pop princesses. Cate is 18 years old and has never even been kissed. She’s focused on studying for her A Levels and going to university. Boys don’t really notice her; she’s always been overshadowed by her vivacious best friend, Sinead. She doesn’t mind though because none of the boys she goes to college with could live up to her two crushes; Edward Rochester from Jane Eyre and Kian. There’s also the small fact that Kian is best friends with Cate’s older brother, Ben and Sinead, well she’s Kian’s younger sister.

But then on Christmas Eve, a lacy, black dress and a dare from Sinead catapults Cate straight into Kian’s waiting arms and before she can even say “mistletoe,” she’s not the quiet girl who’s never been kissed anymore. In fact the kiss they shared was so blazing hot; it must have burned up all the rule books because suddenly Kian freaking Warner actually seems to fancy quiet Cate Klein.

If their families ever found out, it would start World War 3 so they have to meet up in secret. But when tragedy strikes, Kian turns to Cate for comfort. The consequences of that night mean that they can no longer keep their relationship a secret from their families.

Cate has spent 18 years hiding in the shadows, how will she cope when she’s suddenly thrust into the harsh spotlight? He might be a Premier League footballer but being with Kian Warner definitely isn’t a fairy-tale of spa days and designer shopping trips.

(2) Terms and Conditions (Dreamland Billionaires #2) by Lauren Asher (2022)

Declan: I’m destined to become the next CEO of my family’s media empire. The only problem? My grandfather’s inheritance clause. Fulfilling his dying wish of getting married and having an heir seemed impossible until my assistant volunteers for the job. Our marriage was supposed to be the perfect solution to my biggest problem. But the more we act in love for the public, the more unsure I feel about our contract. Caring about Iris was never part of the deal. Especially not when breaking her heart is inevitable.

Iris: My plan to marry Declan was simple in theory. Move in together. Throw a wedding. Have a baby. We set rules to prevent any kind of issues. Ones that were never meant to be broken, no matter how much Declan tempts me. But what happens when our fake relationship bleeds into our real one? Falling in love was never an option. At least not for me.

(3) Trust (Café #3) by Jana Aston (2016)

“Knock knock!”

“Um… Who’s there?”

Yeah. That was me, on my last date. Before you feel sorry for me you should know that I was the one telling the jokes. Jokes as in plural, because I didn’t stop with just one. Of course not.

Hi, I’m Chloe Scott. The most awkward single girl in the city. But I’m going to get it together. I am.

I’m going to learn how to date like a grown up. I’m going to have an orgasm not given to myself. I’m going to fall in love and live happily ever after.

Right after I get out of this interrogation room.

(5) Ready or Not by Cara Bastone (2024)

Eve Hatch lives for surprises! Just kidding. She expects every tomorrow to be pretty much the same as today. She loves her cosy apartment in Brooklyn that’s close to her childhood best friend Willa, and far from her mid-western, traditional family who has never really understood her. While her job is only dream-adjacent, it’s comfortable and steady. She always knows what to expect from her life . . . until she finds herself expecting after an uncharacteristic one-night stand.

The unplanned pregnancy cracks open all the relationships in her life. Eve’s loyal friendship with Willa is feeling tense, right when she needs her the most. And it’s actually Willa’s steadfast older brother, Shep, who steps up to help Eve. He has always been friendly, but now he’s checking in, ordering her surprise lunches, listening to all her complaints, and is . . . suddenly kinda hot? Then, as if she needs one more complication, there’s the baby’s father, who is (technically) supportive but (majorly) conflicted.

Up until this point, Eve’s been content to coast through life. Now, though—maybe it’s the hormones, maybe it’s the way Shep’s shoulders look in a T-shirt—Eve starts to wonder if she has been secretly desiring more from every aspect of her life.

Over the course of nine months, as Eve struggles to figure out the next right step in her expanding reality, she begins to realize that family and love, in all forms, can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

(6) The Nature of Cruelty by L.H. Cosway (2013)

Her name is Lana. She wasn’t dealt the easiest cards in life. She wasn’t dealt the hardest. She has an illness, but she doesn’t let it rule her. The first time she laid eyes on her best friend’s twin brother she fell in love at first sight. It didn’t last very long. He was a hateful boy who made her miserable. The happiest day of her life was when he moved away to London six years ago.

His name is Robert. He breaks the ones who love him. He’s always liked to play games with Lana, see how far he could push her. He once thrived on her pain, but no more. Now she’s coming to London to live with his sister for the summer and this time he plans on being her friend instead of her tormentor. But Lana is scarred by his past bullying. She doesn’t trust him, nor does she have any reason to.

When the two find themselves living under the same roof, they call a truce. This summer will change both of their lives, as they put their history aside and learn one another from scratch.

When fear takes over, we use cruelty as a mask. Robert and Lana’s story will see their masks slip away as the love they felt on the inside shows its true face.

(7) A Thousand Letters (The Austens #2) by Staci Hart (2017)

I lost him with a word.

A thousand letters couldn’t bring him back.

He’s home for his father, not me, that much is painfully clear. But I barely recognize the man he’s become, though I can still see a glimmer of the boy who asked me to be his forever, the boy I walked away from when I was young and afraid.

Maybe if he’d come home under better circumstances, he could speak to me without anger in his voice. Maybe if I’d said yes all those years ago, he’d look at me without the weight of rejection in his eyes. Maybe if things were different, we would have had a chance.

One regretted decision sent him away. One painful journey brought him back to me.

And two broken hearts just want to find their way home.

(8) Confessions of a Canine Drama Queen (Paws in the City #3) by Stefanie London (2023)

August Merriweather has always been good with animals. In fact, she’s known as Manhattan’s Dog Whisperer. Men, on the other hand? Not so much. She’s been falling for the wrong guys ever since her regrettable crush on Keaton Sax, older brother of her best friend, Leah, and the biggest jerkface this side of the Hudson.

Now an emotionally closed off widower, Keaton has become one of the most formidable men on Wall Street, but August knows his secret. He’s not driven by sales targets and bonus checks—Keaton just wants to give his family the security they never had. So when Leah asks Keaton to wrangle her over-the-top, dramatic husky at a weekend talent competition, Keaton says yes…and begs August to help him win the event for Leah.

Between obstacle courses, Molly’s husky temper tantrums and a cabin with just one bed, August is having a blast. Away from the pressure to have a “perfect life” with the “right guy,” she finds herself relaxing and getting to see the softer side of the man she once loved. Is this just a temporary truce? Or could Keaton finally be the right guy at the right time?

(9) Close to You (Fusion #2) by Kristen Proby (2016)

Camilla, “Cami,” LaRue was five-years-old when she first fell in love with Landon Palazzo. Everyone told her the puppy love would fade—they clearly never met Landon. When he left after graduation without a backward glance, she was heartbroken. But Cami grew up, moved on, and became part-owner of wildly popular restaurant Seduction. She has everything she could want…or so she thinks.

After spending the last twelve years as a Navy fighter pilot, Landon returns to Portland to take over the family construction business. When he catches a glimpse of little Cami LaRue, he realizes she’s not so little any more. He always had a soft spot for his little sister’s best friend, but nothing is soft now when he’s around the gorgeous restauranteur.

Landon isn’t going to pass up the chance to make the girl-next-door his. She’s never been one for romance, but he’s just the one to change her mind. Will seduction be just the name of her restaurant or will Cami let him get close enough to fulfil all her fantasies?

(10) Take Two, Birdie Maxwell by Allison Winn Scotch (2024)

Birdie Maxwell thought she’d gotten everything she wanted out of life: fame, adoration, and an A-list Hollywood career. But after an on-set feud goes viral, she leaves L.A. for the one place no one would think to find her: her hometown. There, she’s startled to stumble upon a love letter from a former boyfriend asking for a second chance–but there’s just one problem: the letter was unsigned and she’s not sure which ex sent it. Still, a public reunion with an ex-boyfriend could turn the wave of public opinion back in her favour. Life imitating art. What could go wrong?

Elliot O’Brien, star reporter, knows life isn’t an actual rom-com. Case in point: He’s spent two decades suppressing his long-simmering feelings for his twin sister’s best friend, Birdie. But with his journalism career cratering and Birdie back in their hometown at the same time he is, he realizes chronicling her search for her long-ago ex may be his opportunity to right some wrongs.

As they hit the road in an ancient RV, Birdie and Elliot retrace her romantic history for clues as to who wrote the letter and come face to face with their own romantic missteps, all while grappling with whether happy endings are found only on the big screen–or whether their own happily-ever-after could be closer than they both ever imagined.

(11) On Dublin Street (On Dublin Street #1) by Samantha Young (2012)

I love, love, love this book so much that it’s one of my Top 5 Re-Reads.

Braden Carmichael is used to getting what he wants, and he’s determined to get Jocelyn into his bed. Knowing how skittish she is about entering a relationship, Braden proposes an arrangement that will satisfy their intense attraction without any strings attached.

(12) From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata (2018)

If someone were to ask Jasmine Santos to describe the last few years of her life with a single word, it would definitely be a four-letter one.

After seventeen years—and countless broken bones and broken promises—she knows her window to compete in figure skating is coming to a close.

But when the offer of a lifetime comes in from an arrogant idiot she’s spent the last decade dreaming about pushing in the way of a moving bus, Jasmine might have to reconsider everything.

The Weekly Book Date (5 February 2024)

The Weekly Book Date

Photo Credit: Lisa Fotios @ Pexels.

The Weekly Book Date is where I talk all things books from the previous 7 days.

Like last week, I thought I’d split this week (29 January to 4 February 2024) into Roses & Thorns again but I’m going to start with the Thorns.

Thorns: I only read 2 x books this week and unfortunately one of them, which I’d been really excited about reading, ended up only getting 2 x Stars.

Roses: It’s February and not only are there 9 x amazing books coming out this month but there are also 10 x UK Kindle Book Deals as well. I might not have read as much as I did in previous weeks but I’ve still been active on the blog posting about Five Star Reads – January 2024 (Friday) and UK Kindle Book Deals – February 2024 (Saturday). One of my favourite reality TV shows is back on Hayu here in the UK – Vanderpump Rules (2013+) – and may have inspired a future blog post…

All the best, Louise x

Currently Reading (2):

I’m a mood reader and I’ve been in more of a Kindle mood this week so I’m still halfway through the paperback (1) Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win by Jo Piazza from last week.

(2) The Boy With the Bookstore by Sarah Echavarre Smith (2022)

When a baker meets the bookshop owner of her dreams, and he turns into her nemesis, they’ll both have to read between the lines to avoid a career-ending recipe for disaster.

Max Boyson looks good…from a distance. But up close and personal, the tattooed hottie Joelle Prima has been crushing on for the past year and half has turned into the prime example of why you shouldn’t judge a book by his delectable cover.

When she first learned about the massive renovation to the building they share, Joelle imagined that temporarily combining her Filipino bakery with Max’s neighbouring bookstore would be the perfect opening chapter to their happily ever after. In her fantasies they fed each other bibingka and pandesal while discussing Jane Austen and cooing over her pet hamster, Pumpkin. Reality, however…is quite different. Her gallant prince turned out to be a stubborn toad who snaps at her in front of customers, dries his sweaty gym clothes in her oven, and routinely helps himself to the yummy pastries in her display case without asking.

But beneath Max’s grumpy glares, Joelle senses a rising heat—and a softening heart. And when they discover the real reason for the renovation, they’ll have to put both their business senses and their feelings for each other to the test.

I bought The Boy with the Bookstore when it was first published back in September 2022 but before I could read it, we lost Poppy in November 2022 and Joelle from TBWTB has a pet hamster, Pumpkin so it’s only now over a year later that I’ve actually started reading it. I’m halfway through but my initial thoughts are that I like Joelle as a FMC, she’s got a kind heart and she’s sacrificed so much for her family; her Filipino bakes sound yummy and apart from Amelie & Harriet in Los Angeles, I’m Yours, I’ve never read a romance novel before where an adult has a pet hamster. I’m still kind of on the fence about Max though because at this point I don’t know why he keeps blowing hot and cold on Joelle.

What I Read This Week (2):

(1) Do I Know You? by Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka (2023) ⭐️ ⭐️

Eliza and Graham are anticipating an anything-but-sexy, weeklong getaway to celebrate their five-year anniversary. Nestled on the Northern California coastline, the resort prides itself on being a destination for those in love and those looking to find it. For Eliza and Graham, it might as well be a vacation with a roommate.

When a well-meaning guest mistakes Eliza and Graham for being single and introduces them at the hotel bar, they don’t correct him. Suddenly, they’re pretending to be perfect strangers and it’s unexpectedly… fun? Eliza and Graham find themselves flirting like it’s their first date, and waiting with butterflies in their stomach for the other to text back.

Everyone at the retreat can sense the electric chemistry between Eliza and Graham’s alter egos. But when their scintillating game of roleplaying ends, will they still feel the heat?

This is the 2nd book I’ve read by Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka and my feelings about Do I Know You? couldn’t be more different than they were about The Breakup Tour (which I gave 4 x Stars). I really don’t like writing negative reviews but I didn’t enjoy Do I Know You? at all. Even after I’ve finished reading it, I still don’t understand what the big issue was in Eliza and Graham’s marriage. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not married. Eliza was OK as a character but the falling out over her sister’s engagement party took way too long to resolve. I prefer alpha males in my romance books and dare I say it, Graham came across as kind of a wimp. The only character that really interested me was schoolteacher and eternal romantic, David, who was attending a workshop at the same resort as Eliza and Graham.

(2) Wild for You (The Wilds of Montana #1) by Kristen Proby (2024) ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Remington Wild is a single dad of two adorable kids, and as the oldest son of the Wild family, has recently taken over the Wild River Ranch from his father. Life is crazy, and he’s finally willing to admit that he needs help, and the sooner the better. He has no idea that the beautiful woman he sees every day at Bitterroot Valley Coffee Co. is the woman who would show up for the job.

Erin Montgomery couldn’t get out of Seattle fast enough. It’s not that she doesn’t love her big, loud family, but living in the big city just wasn’t for her. The minute she stepped foot in Bitterroot Valley, she knew she was home. She loves the slower pace, the friendly people, and her job at the coffee shop. Even the smoking hot grumpy guy who stops in every afternoon can’t put a damper on how much she loves small town life!

Thanks to car trouble, and her stubbornness when it comes to using her trust fund, Erin needs a second job and applies for the position of a part-time nanny. She’s surprised to find that it’s Grumpy himself who answers the door at the ranch, but Erin quickly learns that she loves his kids and the ranch, and it’s a no-brainer to take the job. She just has to remind herself to resist the sexy rancher and keep it strictly professional.

Remington is attracted to his younger nanny, and finds himself falling headfirst in love with her. He and his kids have never been happier, and he knows she is the perfect addition to their family for as long as she’s willing to stay. Hopefully forever.

But when secrets are exposed, one of which endangers his children, will their love survive? Or will it tear them apart?

After slogging through Do I Know You? I really needed to get my enthusiasm back for reading and Wild for You downloaded onto my Kindle at the perfect time. Kristen Proby is one of my all-time favourite authors for a reason. Come Away With Me (With Me in Seattle #1) was one of the 1st books I ever read on my Kindle and I immediately fell in love with the extended Montgomery family. Erin from Wild for You is the daughter of Will & Megan from Play With Me (With Me in Seattle #3). Wild for You had lots of my favourite things: small towns where everybody knows everybody else’s business, coffee shops with yummy baked goods, big, noisy families, nannies and their adorable charges and of course, alpha males. I’m already looking forward to Chase & Summer’s story in Chasing Wild (#2) which is due out on 7 May 2024.

What I Bought This Week (3):

Previous Pre-Orders: (1) Wild for You (The Wilds of Montana #1) by Kristen Proby (30 January 2024) & (2) Fool Me Once by Ashley Winstead (1 February 2024).

After finishing A Winter in New York (My Favourite Books of 2023), I knew I wanted to catch up on Josie Silver’s other 3 x books. As soon as I saw that One Night on the Island was only 99p as one of the UK Kindle Book Deals – February 2024, I immediately had to buy it.

(3) One Night on the Island by Josie Silver (2022)

Spending her thirtieth birthday alone is the last thing that dating columnist Cleo wanted, but she is going on a self-coupling quasi-sabbatical–at the insistence of her boss–in the name of re-energizing herself and adding a new perspective to her column. The remote Irish island she’s booked is a far cry from London, but at least it’s a chance to hunker down in a luxury cabin and indulge in some quiet, solitary self-care while she figures out her next steps in her love life and her career.

Mac is also looking forward to some time to himself. With his life in Boston deteriorating in ways he can’t bring himself to acknowledge, his soul searching has brought him to the same Irish island in search of his roots and some clarity. Unfortunately, a mix-up with the bookings means both solitude seekers have reserved the same one-bedroom hideaway on exactly the same dates.

Instantly at odds with each other, Cleo and Mac don’t know how they’re going to manage until the next weekly ferry arrives. But as the days go by, they no longer seem to mind each other’s company quite as much as they thought they would…

Cover Reveal (1):

On Thursday (1st), Cosmopolitan exclusively revealed the cover and an excerpt from The Dixon Rule. Elle Kennedy is one of my favourite authors and if you haven’t caught up on the Campus Diaries yet, The Graham Effect (#1) is only 99p as a UK Kindle Book Deal for February 2024.

(1) The Dixon Rule (Campus Diaries #2) by Elle Kennedy (14 May 2024)

Diana Dixon has a lot going on this summer. She’s rehearsing for a ballroom dance competition, juggling two jobs, and dealing with an ex-boyfriend who can’t take the hint it’s over. Yet despite all that, she still has plenty of time and energy to tell Shane Lindley to screw off.

Shane just moved into her apartment building and seems dedicated to sleeping his way through her entire cheerleading squad. Sure, he’s a tall, gorgeous hockey player, but he’s messing with her turf. This calls for some ground rules: no parties in her apartment, leave her teammates alone, and—most importantly—leave her alone.

What Diana doesn’t realize is that Shane’s sick of hook-ups and tired of being on the rebound after his long-term girlfriend called it quits. He wants a relationship. And when his ex comes back into the picture, he pretends he has one to make her jealous…and who better to play the girlfriend role than his sassy new neighbour?

Despite Diana’s reluctance to break her rule, a fake relationship is the perfect solution for her own ex issues, and soon she can’t deny something is sizzling between her and Shane. Something hot and completely unexpected.

And it might just be getting a little too real.

The Weekly Book Date is where I talk all things books from the previous 7 days.

It’s a good job that my favourite number is 3 (#geek) because for the 3rd week running, I read 3 x books last week (15-21 January 2024) and with 2 x Five Star Reads I’m now up to 3 for 2024.

I’m still making a dent in my TBR because I didn’t buy any new books last week. It won’t last though because I’ve been putting together the Next Month in Books – February 2024 blog post (out on Wednesday) and there are 9 x amazing new releases.

What I Read This Week:

(1) Last Call at the Local (Love, Lists & Fancy Ships #3) by Sarah Grunder Ruiz (2024) ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Raine Hart is used to the challenges of living with ADHD. It’s why she ditched her life in Boston to busk around Europe as a traveling musician. No boss. No schedule. No one to disappoint but herself. But when a careless mistake in Ireland leaves her unable to perform, she sees no other option but to give up her nomadic life.

Since inheriting the Local, Jack Dunne has wanted to make the pub his own. But the baggage of running a family business and the intrusive thoughts that stem from his OCD make changing things a challenge.

Over a pint with handsome, tattooed Jack, Raine accidentally insults him and the pub. Instead of taking offense, Jack, impressed by her vision of what the pub could be, offers her a job bringing it to life.

But when Raine and Jack develop feelings for one another their opposite lifestyles won’t accommodate, it becomes clear the pub isn’t the only thing that needs reinventing. As the end of their business collaboration draws near, they’ll have to find a way past the limits they’ve placed on themselves or let go of a love that could last a lifetime.

After 3 x meh reads last week, Last Call at the Local was my 2nd Five Star Read of 2024. I knew LCatL was set in Ireland but I didn’t realise until I started reading that it was actually set in Cobh. It made it more special because we went to Cobh for the day when we were in Cork a few years ago and the train journey from Cobh to Cork is just gorgeous. One of the other reasons I gave LCatL is because of the mental health representation. Jack’s struggle with OCD was written with such sensitivity. As somebody who’s struggled with anxiety and depression since I was a teenager, I feel like LCatL is one of the most accurate books I’ve ever read about mental health.

(2) Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth by Noa Tishby (2021) ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Israel. The small strip of arid land is 5,700 miles away but remains a hot-button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel, how many people actually know the facts?

Here to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby. But this is not your Bubbie’s history book (Bill Maher, host of Real Time with Bill Maher). Instead, offering a fresh, 360-degree view, Tishby brings her “passion, humor, and deep intimacy” (Yossi Klein Halevi, New York Times bestselling author of Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor) to the subject, creating an accessible and dynamic portrait of a tiny country of outsized relevance. Through bite-sized chunks of history and deeply personal stories, Tishby chronicles her homeland’s evolution, beginning in Biblical times and moving forward to cover everything from WWI to Israel’s creation to the disputes dividing the country today. Tackling popular misconceptions with an abundance of facts, Tishby provides critical context around headline-generating controversies and offers a clear, intimate account of the richly cultured country of Israel.

Since October 7, I’ve had so many questions about Israel, Zionism and antisemitism and Noa has been such an amazing advocate for Israel on social media. It’s informative and debunks a lot of the misinformation being spread by anti-Israel protestors.

(3) Merry & Wild (Wilds of Montana #0.5) by Kristen Proby (2024) ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

John Wild isn’t about to let his baby sister drive herself through a snow storm to the town holiday dance, despite not being thrilled about being at the dance himself. Until he sees that a former classmate, Joy, is also there, and he decides this party isn’t so bad after all. Wanting her to himself, away from the crowd of seemingly everyone in town, John talks Joy into going out to eat, and later, back to his ranch.

Joy has had a crush on John Wild forever, and now he’s taking her home with him. Lucky for her, the storm gets worse, and they end up snowed in at John’s cabin, and in his arms. He’s as kind as she remembers, and way sexier than she ever dreamed. Being stranded with him is more exciting than she thought possible. Not to mention, he doesn’t have any holiday decorations up, so she talks him into taking her out to cut down a tree so she can make his cabin festive for Christmas.

But when the storm clears, and it’s time to take Joy home, will John let her walk out of his life forever, or will he make Joy his forever?

Next Month in Books – January 2024

3F45CE05-952F-409D-B87D-6BB95DB18FE9

It’s definitely quality over quantity for the first Next Month in Books of 2024 with 3 x new releases to get excited about in January: Last Call at the Local (02/01), The Breakup Tour (25/01) & Wild for You (30/01).

As usual, if you’ve got any suggestions for January 2024 releases I might have missed out on, please let me know in the comments or by e-mail at louisehallbooks@gmail.com.

Until next time, happy reading x

Note: I don’t get paid for including any of the links below, they’re just the books I’m most looking forward to being published each month.

2ND JANUARY 2024

Last Call at the Local by Sarah Grunder Ruiz

To say I’ve been waiting a long time for Last Call at the Local is a massive understatement because I actually pre-ordered it all the way back in December 2022. Sarah is a New-to-Me Author (although I’ve got Love, Lists and Fancy Ships on my TBR). What really drew me to this book was (1) I love books set in Ireland (the first ever grown-up romance books I fell in love with were written by Marian Keyes), (2) it’s got a tattooed LI and (3) I’m still waiting for my formal autism diagnosis so I’m always happy to find books with neurodiverse characters.

25TH JANUARY 2024

The Breakup Tour by Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka

The question is will The Breakup Tour finally be the one to break my EW & ASB duck? Technically I could call them New-to-Me Authors even though I’ve already got The Roughest Draft on my bookshelf and Do I Know You? on my Kindle and I’m really excited to read them both but I keep being thwarted by my ever-increasing TBR. I was planning to set my 2024 Goodreads Challenge super low but maybe I need to set it high again given how many amazing books I own but haven’t read yet?

Riley Wynn went from a promising singer-songwriter to a superstar overnight, thanks to her breakup song concept album and its unforgettable lead single. When Riley’s ex-husband claims the hit song is about him, she does something she hasn’t in ten years and calls Max Harcourt, her college boyfriend, and the real inspiration for the song of the summer.

Max hasn’t spoken to Riley since their relationship ended. He’s content with managing the retirement home his family owns, but it’s not the life he dreamed of filled with music. When Riley asks him to go public as her song-writing muse, he agrees on one condition: he’ll join her in her band on tour. As they perform across the country, Max and Riley start to realize that while they hit some wrong notes in the past, their future could hold incredible things. And their rekindled relationship will either last forever or go down in flames.

Wild for You (The Wilds of Montana #1) by Kristen Proby

Kristen Proby is one of my favourite authors and after being introduced to Bitterroot Valley during the ski trip taken by London, Drew and the Montgomery cousins in The Stand-In, I’m really looking forward to Erin & Remington’s story.

Next Month in Books – November 2023

Of all my regularly scheduled posts, Next Month in Books is usually my favourite to write because who doesn’t love the idea of new books? I schedule Next Month in Books for the last Wednesday of every month and I’ve usually written it well in advance but it’s taken until now (27 October 2023) for me to even sit down and starting compiling Next Month in Books – November 2023 and it’s not because of the 7 x books I’m writing about because I’m really excited to read all of them (I’m already partway through one of them but more on that later).

After the brutal massacre and kidnappings in Israel (with victims including so many of the most vulnerable members of any society like babies, children and the elderly) on October 7, I’ve been so disheartened by the response of so many of my once-favourite authors that I’ve lost a lot of enthusiasm for talking about books. I’m not Jewish but my great-grandfather was and he was the first member of his family born in the UK after his parents and elder sister escaped the pogroms in Russia (now Lithuania).

The human suffering in both Israel and Gaza breaks my heart. So many authors I’d previously respected were silent about October 7 but have since posted their support for Gaza, which leads me to believe that to them, Jewish people don’t count. As a proud Jewish ally (My Favourite Novels with Jewish Representation), the last thing I want to do is support any form of antisemitism. I’ve written before about how my grandfather (who wasn’t Jewish because his father married a Gentile) suffered so much antisemitism in his early life that he legally changed his Jewish surname in order to protect his family.

Before October 7, I’d decide which books to buy based on their blurbs whereas now I feel like I have to check each author’s social media accounts as well.

Side Note: I don’t claim to know the individual politics of the authors included in today’s blog post but as far as I can tell (when I wrote this post), they’ve remained neutral about the conflict on social media and/or haven’t displayed any form of antisemitism.

What changed my mind and made me decide to sit down and write this post? I’ve been struggling with my mental health recently and although it’s important to bear witness to the suffering in Israel (and Gaza), stand alongside my Jewish family and fight all forms of antisemitism, I’ve realised that I also need to take breaks. My love for books is a huge part of my identity and if I lose my enthusiasm for reading, my mental health will only get worse so I need to try and find a balance. Books can offer an escape from everything that’s happening in the world and that’s why I want to celebrate these 7 x new releases.

As usual, if you’ve got any suggestions for November 2023 releases I might have missed out on, please let me know in the comments or by e-mail at louisehallbooks@gmail.com.

All the best, Louise x

Jingle Bell Rock (The Donovans #3) by Lily Kate

Fresh out of high school, I—Tara Kendrick—was madly in love with Gavin Donovan. Until one day he disappeared in a web of secrets, and I never heard from him again. Fast forward thirteen years: I’m stranded at a rundown bed & breakfast during a snowstorm, and guess who’s the new owner?

Merry Christmas to me.

While I’m locked up with my ex-flame and the current thorn-in-my-side, I’m reminded of the laundry list of items that are hard on Gavin Donovan—his biceps, his abs, his thighs…and now the massive diamond rock he slips onto my finger when I agree to be his fake fiancé for reasons I’m not comfortable repeating aloud. But I have as much incentive to make this arrangement work as he does, so falling into bed with the enemy is not on my to-do list.

As the jingle bells start to chime, however, the huge rock on my finger isn’t the hardest thing between us. It’s hard to keep my hands off Gavin. It’s hard to pretend this relationship isn’t real. It’s hard to remember how I ever fell out of love with him in the first place.

Christmas in Cape May (The Sunshine Sisters #3.5) by Jennifer Probst

Devon Pratt loves many things in life. The beauty of flowers. The yin and yang of energy. The power of positivity in people. And everything to do with the Christmas season.

As a floral shop owner in the beach town of Cape May, she looks forward to decorating both the town and running the annual holiday party to benefit the local animal shelter. Too bad the new owner of her favourite venue is more like the Grinch than Santa. Working with him will be a challenge, but she’s too full of seasonal cheer to let him annoy her, right?

Jameson Franklin hates many things in life. Crowds. Fake cheer. Ostentatious décor. And especially Christmas. The season is full of things he’d rather avoid, but since taking over the popular restaurant Vintage temporarily for his cousin as a favour, he’s trying to play nice with the locals. Too bad the florist is insisting on overrunning his sacred space with blooms, dogs, and an endless positive persistence that pushes all of his buttons. But when too many heated confrontations lead to heated encounters, he begins to wonder what it would be like to love not only Christmas, but Devon Pratt.

Let the festivities begin.

Dr. Fake Fiancé (Doctors #4) by Louise Bay

Full Disclosure: I feel like a proper book blogger now because I was recently given an ARC of Dr. Fake Fiancé (my first ever ARC) in exchange for an honest review. I’d already pre-ordered DFF because Louise Bay is one of my all-time favourite authors and I love the Doctors Series (Dr. Off Limits (#1) was one of my Five Star Reads – October 2022). I’m currently reading (and really enjoying) DFF and will post a review once I’ve finished.

She’s famous. He hasn’t a clue who she is.

I’m in London, in disguise, trying to hide from the tabloids, when I slam into a wall.

Except it’s not a wall. It’s a hot hunk of British man.

And I just poured scorching hot coffee all over him.

He goes from burn victim to my fiancé in three days flat. It’s all fake to divert tabloid attention away from my recent breakup with my long-time boyfriend-turned-traitor.

Except it doesn’t feel fake. The way he looks at me makes me shiver. When he touches me, I’m molten lava.

Neither of us is looking for anything serious.

Except…did I tell you how hot he looks playing naked Twister? He might just be husband material.

For real.

The Stand-In (Single in Seattle #5) by Kristen Proby

I don’t like my new boss. Not at all.

London Ambrose is a spoiled billionaire’s daughter. And now she’s the new co-owner of the Seattle football team, but that doesn’t mean that she knows diddly squat about football.

There’s nothing I hate more than having someone micromanaging me, shadowing my every move, and giving me their two cents on Every. Little. Thing. as I coach MY defensive line.

I don’t care about new team jerseys and branding or answering her million and one questions about how I do my job. But, I can’t help but come to her defence when an old flame shows up and starts harassing her. I’m a Montgomery. We don’t let anyone mess with women.

Now, I’m suddenly in a fake relationship, pretending to date the gorgeous billionaire and learning so many surprising things about this captivating woman that I just can’t seem to stay away from her.

When the lines between our fake relationship and real relationship blur, and my initial distaste for her turns into desire, I find myself coaching the most important game of my life – do I let my guard down or do I let London Ambrose walk away forever?

Make-Believe Match (Cherry Tree Harbor #3) by Melanie Harlow

Fall in love with my enemy? No way.

Marry him to save my family’s struggling ski resort? That’s a different story…

Getting hitched is the only way I can inherit Snowberry Lodge, and I’ll do anything to spare my childhood home from the wrecking ball–even wear Devlin Buckley’s ring on my finger.

Not that I’ll enjoy it.

Sure, he’s charming and handsome, and that no-last-names one night stand we shared ended with a fantastically big bang (I saw stars I hadn’t seen in six months, if you catch my drift).

But I’ll never trust him–he was working for the company trying to bulldoze my life.

Right up until the day he knocked on my door with an offer I couldn’t refuse.

Marry him, and he’ll help me restore my family’s crumbling resort to its former glory–and get revenge on his ex-boss in the process. Once our goals are achieved, we’ll go our separate ways.

It’s temporary. Strictly business. Purely for show.

Until I realize how much I like it when he says “my wife.”

Once we’re sharing a last name–and a bed–our make-believe match starts to feel a little too real.

And if I’m not careful, I could lose everything… my home, my dreams, and my heart.
